Department of Philosophy

ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT

The Department of Philosophy was established in the year 2004. “Philosophy” is a compound of two Greek elements – “Philo” meaning “loving” and “Sophia” meaning “wisdom”. Philosophy, in short, means the love of wisdom. Philosophy department primarily focuses on this wisdom by answering to the ultimate questions relating to the nature and meaning of life.

The department enables the students achieve the following objectives through classroom discussions, seminars, projects/assignments and periodical examinations:

  • Understand philosophical concepts, theories and policies in a coherent manner.
  • Develop the ability to constructively criticize assumptions and arguments.
  • Be able to evaluate the adequacy and justifiability of philosophical concepts, theories, and policies.
  • Develop the ability to analyse philosophical terms in a clear manner to avoid vagueness and ambiguity.
  • Be able to accept oneself and others with tolerance and understanding.
DEPARTMENT ACTIVITIES

Philosophy program is offered at 2 levels – Bachelors (B.A) & Masters (M.A) degrees, covering the following areas:

  • M.A. – Indian Philosophy & Logic, Western Philosophy & Logic as well as specialization areas such as Philosophy of Human Rights, Management, Education, Industrial Psychology etc.
  • B.A. – Indian Philosophy, Western Philosophy, Applied Ethics, Symbolic Logic as well as specialization areas such as Philosophy of Education, Social Philosophy etc.
